Non-EU driving licenses - Exchange and recognition
Information on exchange and recognition of driving licenses issued by a non-EU country
If you do not have your normal residence in Greece and that state does not fall into the Vienna Convention, in order to be able to drive in Greece, you must hold a valid international driving license. In order to be valid, an international driving license must be accompanied by your current national driving license.
If that State is listed in the Vienna Convention, you may drive on Greek territory with your national driving license until you have your normal residence in Greece. Your national driving license is required to comply with the provisions of Annex 6 “National Driving License” of the aforementioned Convention.
If you have your normal residence in Greece, you must get a Greek driving license in order to drive on Greek territory. In order to apply for a Greek driving license, you must contact the Transport and Communications Department of the Regional Unit of your place of residence, by submitting, in addition to the other supporting documents required, your driving license. The licence remains in the file of the Department and can be returned to you upon submitting the corresponding Greek license.
You are exempted from the above obligation to obtain a Greek driving license if your driving license can be converted into a Greek driving license of a corresponding category. This case currently applies to driving licenses issued in Switzerland, Republic of Serbia, Republic of Albania, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Africa, South Korea and the countries of the former Soviet Union for expatriates.
If you have exchanged in the past a driving license issued by a non-EU country with a license issued in another EU country, it is still valid in Greek territory as it stands, as long as the conditions for granting the corresponding category of Greek driving license are met.
