Ottawa Fire Services recommends that you install smoke alarms in every bedroom where people sleep behind closed doors.
You should already have a smoke alarm installed in the hallway outside your bedroom. But if a fire starts in the bedroom while you’re asleep with the door closed, will the alarm detect it soon enough for a safe escape?
As part of an ongoing public education campaign, Ottawa Fire Services recommends that you install smoke alarms in every bedroom.
Where do I need a smoke alarm?
New homes built in Ontario since 2015 must have a smoke alarm with a strobe light installed on each level, plus one more installed inside each bedroom. This is the legal minimum for a new home.
For older homes, you are required to have a working smoke alarm on every level and outside every sleeping area. Ottawa Fire Services also recommends that if you sleep with your bedroom door closed, install a smoke alarm in your bedroom.
How often should I test my alarm?
To check that your smoke alarm is working, push the test button. It will beep loudly if it is working properly. Test them monthly!
What if I’m a renter?
If you live in a rental unit, it is the owner's legal responsibility to ensure there are working smoke alarms. As the renter or resident, you are required to test the alarms monthly and immediately report any problems with the alarm to your landlord.

- Replace batteries once a year. Pick your birthday or another memorable date.
- When testing your alarm, check the expiry date. Alarms should be replaced every seven to 10 years. If you aren’t sure or there is no expiry date, it’s time for the alarm to be replaced.
