Looking for a way to share your knowledge of recreation, art or fitness with your community once or twice a week? Are you looking for a reason to get out of the house and meet new people? No matter your age, now is your chance to explore exciting new job opportunities in recreation and culture!

What can a part-time job in recreation do for you? For Kenny Yuen, it was all about encouraging a love of chess in younger generations.

“I have a full-time job, but I love working for the City and don’t have any plans to stop,” remarks Kenny. “Working with the city has been great for me and has opened doors for many opportunities. I would say it gets your foot in the door for numerous internal jobs.”

Kenny has been working part-time for the City since 2016 and many families might recognize him as a former chess instructor. He prepared lesson plans that were both fun and educational and throughout a lot of the pandemic, he taught classes virtually.

What was the best part of the job for him? “I enjoyed watching the students learn and gradually improve from the methods and tactics I taught. I even set up matches between students with some of them versus myself and they were quite excited to play against me.”

In-person and virtual positions are now open for applications. To explore all job opportunities with the City of Ottawa, visit ottawa.ca/recjobs. Be sure to check the page often as new positions are posted on a regular basis.
