Council today approved a motion to reopen Wellington Street to all traffic, as soon as operationally possible, but not before March 1. The reopening plan will include a temporary protected bike lane.
Wellington Street was closed to traffic in late January 2022 due to the illegal occupation of the street and has remained closed since then. Reopening Wellington Street will make it easier for vehicles to travel in the downtown core, mitigating traffic impacts resulting both from the return of federal employees to office work and nearby construction. The City will get the road ready for use and explore options to temporarily close Wellington Street for special events and community activities or for the safety and well-being of residents.
The City will soon begin a transportation study on the future of Wellington Street in partnership with Public Services and Procurement Canada and the National Capital Commission. Staff expect to report back with a recommendation in late 2023 or early 2024.
Council also approved zoning by-law amendments at 535 Chapel to convert an existing four-unit low-rise apartment to a nine-unit low-rise apartment, at 1525 and 1533 Goth Avenue to rezone the lands to permit a low-rise apartment building with specific zoning provisions, at 4829 Abbott Street East to add office use to the site-specific exception for up to three years, at 5100 Kanata Avenue to allow for an animal care establishment as an additional permitted use and part of 4149 Strandherd Drive to permit an automobile dealership.
Council passed a motion encouraging residents to consider donating to disaster relief resources to help those affected by earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
Council also approved the Transportation Committee’s terms of reference.
