The first class of the City’s new Swim City program celebrated its completion at the Ray Friel Recreation Complex on Monday, February 13.

The first class of the City’s new Swim City program celebrated its completion at the Ray Friel Recreation Complex on Monday night. In the coming weeks, more swimmers across Ottawa will complete their first class of the new program and take their place in history for a new era of fun.

We had a chance to chat with Amélie Marin-Rus and Evelyn Riendeau, two of the swimming instructors at Ray Friel, about their experience. Here’s what they had to say.

What do you think about the new levels and program? Do you think the kids enjoyed it?

The kids really enjoyed the fun and more engaging parts of the new program. We’ve got Swim Tots, Swim Creatures and Swim Colours, along with the participation stickers. As kids pass their levels, they get to collect the stickers and put them on their map.

There are new skills to learn as part of the new program, like a handstand in waist-deep water and the front somersault! The kids had a lot of fun with the new activities.

What do you like most about your job?

Being a lifeguard is a great job because we get to be a part of the children’s learning experience and see them grow and evolve throughout each session. We also really enjoy our coworkers! It’s a positive environment with a lot of pride.

How does it feel to be part of the first class of the new program?

It’s very exciting! These are the very first stickers to ever be given out for the new Swim City program, and we’re the instructors who get to give them out. How cool is that?

The City’s Recreation, Cultural and Facilities Services Department designed and launched the new Swim City program in 2022, where participants collect stickers for their Swim City map as they successfully complete each level. The levels in the pre-school Swim Creatures stream were developed in consultation with the Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg First Nation. Each level is named after a creature that swims in the Ottawa River. Dean Ottawa, an artist from Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg First Nation, created artwork of these creatures. The names of creatures are written in the Anishinābemowin Algonquin language, English and French on the stickers and program materials. Adopting elements of Anishinābe Algonquin culture creates an important connection that will help children to better appreciate Anishinābe Algonquin history, traditions and nature.
