I bought two boots from ebay, very upset!!!!!
It is not the problem of the two boots, it is about the shipping.
I bought two boots from a ebayer located in the US. My order was shipped via UPS by the seller. Today I received a delivery notice from UPS and they want to charge me $85 brokerage fee!!! I have no idea what this brokerage fee is. My order is valued about $200 US Dollars and I paid the seller $22 US Dollar for the shipping cost as well. I know I might be charged 15% taxes, but it would be far less than $85.
Just a reminder, if you want to buy things from ebay, DON'T ship via UPS!!!!!

:flaming: :crying: :crying:

It's not a problem with UPS. When you trade on eBay, you take the risk of being charged custom duties when pass Canada Customs. You're just unlucky for they picked your stuff at the customs.

So you mean it is not necessary to be charged each time? How come UPS did not explain this clearly to me when I asked them if I would be charged each time I bought things from abroad?

Thanks a lot anyway!!

It is a problem with UPS! If the seller ships USPS, it is usually OK. UPS doesn't even provide an estimate on how much the brokarage fee would be. Never ever ship UPS or FedEx or any other commercial couriers for that matter. Ship USPS, the only way to Canada.

Well, it's really hard to guarantee that you definitely would or would not be charged. Technically, if the customs office picked your shipment for inspection and they decided that the goods are duty applicable, then there'll be a charge. But they don't inspect every package. So that's why a lot of people don't pay extra.

Thanks a lot for all your reply. I am not quite clear about the duty thing. If I am charged the custom duties, do I still need to pay the 15% tax?? So now I have no other choic at all? :crying: It is even more expensive than one of the boots I bought........:(

Do you think I can argue with UPS and try to waive this charge?

USPS stands for United States Postal Services, the equivalence of Canada Post.

Bunny: You can certainly try to argue with UPS, but I doubt you will get what you want, try anyway, you might get somewhere. UPS' shipping scam has been widely posted throughout the Internet.

Thank you so much! But on what point do you think I should stand on to argue with them, since duties and taxes are all charged by governments........

It is not duties. It is brokerage fee. Your stuff has to pass the customs and UPS did that for you. If you ship via UPS, you'll be charged a brokerage fee every time unless it is a gift under the value of $20.

JK said it! It's not duty, it's their so called brokerage fee, a.k.a. their fee for declaring and filling out custom forms for you. Be prepared for the worst, but fight anyway!

尽量用 United States Postal Services or Canada Post. 一般比UPS 便宜。

Oops, maybe I confused. I deal with FedEx regularly on overseas shipments, and they don't charge any brokerage fee. But they do send customs duty bills from time to time. They explained that whenever a shipment got inspected at customs office, there would be a likelihood for duty charge. The case is they pay the duty first to get the package thru, then charge back to the client.
