The Christmas tree is an important part of many people’s holiday celebrations. Ottawa Fire Services would like to remind you that there are safety tips to keep in mind as you put up your Christmas tree this holiday season.
・ If you buy a tree several days before you plan to set it up, proper storage is necessary. The tree should remain outside in a cool area that provides protection from the wind and sun. Make a straight cut across the butt end of the tree, about one inch from the end, and place it in a container of water. The cut will open up the tree stem and allow it to soak up moisture.
・ When you bring the tree inside, another cut should be made an inch higher than the initial cut. Make sure your tree stand can hold plenty of water. It is necessary to check the water supply every day. A stand that holds four litres of water is recommended.
・ Whether you have a real tree or an artificial one, it is important to place your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, television sets and other sources of heat.
・ Turn off the Christmas tree lights when you are not at home and when you go to sleep.
・ Avoid the use of combustible decorations.
・ Check all electric lights and connections. Make sure cords are not frayed and never place lighted candles on the tree. Avoid using too many extension cords together - use power bars instead and never run cords under rugs.

Your Christmas tree can be a beautiful addition to your home and be a large part of your holiday celebrations. Making sure your tree is safe will help ensure your family has a great Christmas.
