In a recent development, Whatì, a community in Canada, is now experiencing internet speeds comparable to Yellowknife, thanks to the installation of a fiber optic internet connection. The completion of the fiber optic line was announced by the Tłı̨chǫ government, who led the project in collaboration with the territorial and federal governments. The new line runs along the Whatì highway and connects to the existing fiber optic network at highway 3. Northwestel is responsible for operating the new internet service.
Chief Alfonz Nitsiza of Whatì expressed enthusiasm for the benefits the new internet brings, particularly in terms of connecting students to online courses and improving the functionality of the local health center. He highlighted the significant communication advantages the high-speed internet will provide for the community.
While the fiber line has been installed, not all residents and community buildings have access to high-speed internet yet. To gain access, residents need to have a fiber optic line installed in their homes, connecting them to the high-speed network. While some residents, including Chief Nitsiza, have already been connected, others are still awaiting installation. Several community buildings, such as the Mezi Community School and the local health center, are also awaiting fiber hookup.

However, some buildings have already been connected to the new fiber optic network, including the Whatì Community Store. Kim Tucker, the store and motel manager, reported that the internet has been "flawless," significantly improving work efficiency and allowing for multiple tasks to be handled simultaneously.
Individual homes have also been connected to the high-speed internet, with Lisa Nitsiza mentioning the benefits for work-related emails and her children's enjoyment of online gaming.
The completion of the fiber optic line in Whatì marks a significant step forward in enhancing connectivity and improving communication capabilities for the community, albeit with further installations needed to ensure widespread access to high-speed internet.
