<HTML>the first meeting of the reading club in ottawa took off on nov 22, 2001. it went from 7:30 to 10:30. many members (including me) got too excited and couldn't sleep
well for that night. that's why i am writing the briefing now. i hope the two bodyguards enjoyed the conversation as much as we did. :)
i was a little suprised to find myself to be the only non-it person in the club, but fortunately we didn't turn the meeting into a programmer group meeting. i remember i read a post maybe one month ago in this bbs complaining about the dominance of engineers and computer programmmers
in ottawa who don't have good taste. i haven't been here for too long, but based on the meeting we had last week, i must say there are interesting people around.
for most time we just chatted about books we read before, like ping fan de shi jie by lu yao, short articles by wang xiao bo, and novels by zhang ai ling (personally, i don't like her that much) i guess most of us have not talked about these for a long long time. it reminds me of the college days: dark night, "cozy" domitory room, a group of friends with beer, cigar, talk about the stories of ling hu chong and yingying, qiao feng and a zhu, yang guo and xiao long nu, music of qi qing, luo da you, paul simon, beatles, cui jian, hei bao, with wind soaring outside...
anyway, it was fun. i got two books and i am reading them this weekend. maybe i'll write something about them later. one lucky girl got the book by long ying tai (i wanted that one, but she was fast). i remember the first article in that book is a speech long gave in taibei university. it was
excellent. i remember somebody sent a copy on internet and it was on wenxuecity for a while. if you have a copy of it, pls paste it here so that everyone can share it.
what else can i say? well, i think it is fun to have some firends together, relax, again, forget about money, computer, and all the other boring stuff in life. there are plenty of things to enjoy, we could have talked all night if it were not a weekday. life is beautiful, but you can
enjoy the beauty of it much better if you can look at it from different perspectives, and that is what i like about a reading club instead of reading along.
members: if you want, maybe you can write something about the book you are reading and share it with the people on bbs. we might have another meeting sometime next month. we'll send notice so that new members can join in.</HTML>

</HTML>

<HTML>JANE
:arc: :arc: :arc: :arc:

</HTML>

<HTML>Thanks a lot, pal. :)
I have it already.

<HTML>thanks, riven. that sounds like a good idea. i vote for it. but it does not have to be reading only. movies and music are also welcomed. some movies have dialogues as beautiful as any good books, and so are lyrics from some songs. the reading club is a democratic organization, so we'll discuss this and maybe vote for an administrator in the next meeting.
i didn't know there were chinese books in the pub lib until last meeting. it's on my way to work and i pass there everyday. will check it out soon. thanks for the info. by the way, if you happen to bump into a really nice book, movie or song, paste the info here, like a2z did. share the happiness with your fellow chinese. thanks.</HTML>

<HTML>I like 池莉 too. My favorite books of hers are: 烦恼人生, 你以为你是谁 and 来来往往. Her books are very down to earth. Some times you find yourself or your friend or the people you know in them.

史铁生 is also a writer who has my respect. I like his 我的遥远的清平湾 and 我与地坛, for the latter, I can read it again and again and every time read something new. If you have a night all by yourself, 我与地坛 maybe a good companion.</HTML>

Sorry, Jane.</HTML>

正象那位朋友讲的,DOWN TO EARTH。</HTML>

<HTML>an alternative way to think about it (my favorite way): with a heart of "chu shi", do things that "ru shi" (god, i wish i could have typed that one in chinese). just like what hu2 shi4 advocated about attitude toward politics: have disinterested interest.</HTML>

<HTML>I was one of those who didn't sleep well after the first meeting ( and maybe the most noisy one there). Actually it was not only a meeting, it was kind of friends reunion for me, though we never met each other before.
I am an IT guy, a real IT guy, I mean from University to now, computer is the only major and career for me. Or, I can put it in this way: I know nothing beside programming - that's the only thing I learned in the past more than ten years and the one thing I can make a living on now ( and maybe future). While, I like it, it is fun, I appriecate the logic, the precise, and the creativity involved in my work, and in this field, you always got a lot to learn, always got chance to catch up, which is all nice part of life. But, computer is by no means my whole life, ever and forever. I guess I need another world to be happier, one world a little bit higher, further and better than everyday life. Whenever I open my favorite book, I am entering it.
I miss my friends and books in China, that's my regret to the life in Ottawa. Thank you, Reading club, thank you, all club members, you make the life more beautiful here.

Want second meeting sometime before Christmas?</HTML>

<HTML>no problem for me, but let's make it on Satureday afternoon or evening, if everybody is okay with it (i will be away on the next two fridays). muranan, i read your book. this guy had an interesting life.</HTML>

<HTML>I'm just about to ask when should we meet again, then there you are, muranan, you've just read my mind. Staturday is not problem for me. I felt the same way as muranan, it's the friendness and closeness that really make me thrill. Reading club might sound a bit old fashioned to some people, but I don't care, as long as it makes me enjoy and happy.
Shrek, I read your book, it was a little bit sad, seems true love has never made its way to happiness.</HTML>

<HTML>well, that's not my way to interprate that book, although i do think tie3 ning2 made the end of the story less impressive than the rest of the book. anyway, i don't think it's a sad story. i don't buy those kind of "snow white" "so the prince and the princess lived happy ever after" stories. in reality, it's more liekly to have a prince who cheated on the princess, and they divorced, and the princess died tragically. sometimes it's beautiful because it is not perfect.
the end of the story reminds me of "the bridge of maddison county". moral standard eventually prevails. i can't think about any better ending. at least it is better than"the horse whispers" or "paradise lost" where finally death ends the stories. just like a fire, burning everything out. the part i like about "da4 yu4 nu3" is where she got over her past lover. that's where i see the beauty of a mature person.</HTML>

<HTML>You guys are awesome! And I am wild with joy to learn that we have a book club in Ottawa. And I am one of the non-IT student in town. I wanted so much to join, but this Saturday seems bad coz we have finals ahead. How about next one? Can you let me know when and where you are meeting again, and what to bring? Looking forward to that.</HTML>
