Ten years ago Canada stole the American dream. Now the U.S. is taking it back
A decade ago, Canada seemed to be pulling ahead of the U.S. economically. But our housing crisis has put the U.S. back in front, pulling further away.

In May 2014, the New York Times published an opinion piece that sent shock waves through both Canada and the U.S.
It cheekily suggested that the American dream now belonged to Canada, which was pulling ahead in terms of median after-tax income, quality of education and economic equality, quickly creating a buzz against the backdrop of the upcoming 2015 federal election.
The piece was titled “It’s now the Canadian dream,” and conservatives said it showed policies under then-prime minister Stephen Harper were helping the middle class.

Yes the American dream was in Canada, even though 50k Canadians move to America every year and there are currently over 1 million Canadians in the U.S.
What a stupid headline. The U.S. has ALWAYS been a better country for white-collar professionals. Salaries are 50 to 100% higher, taxes are 30% lower, housing is 50% lower, not to mention groceries, utilities, cell phone plans are also cheaper.

The American dream was that all citizens could live stable, secure lives and that they children could advance socially and economically. The American dream existed in the states for a while after the war but is definitely not a possibility for most Americans now. Poverty rates are up, education is down, infant mortality is higher in the US than most other developed nations, there is more social mobility’ in European now than in the states.
