Carleton University and Cloakware Announce Opening of Security Research Lab
Lab to Focus on Software Security and Software Protection
OTTAWA, ONTARIO [November 24, 2003] - Cloakware Corporation, an innovative creator of application security products for software protection, and Carleton University today announced the opening of the Carleton - Cloakware Security Research Laboratory at Carleton University in Ottawa. Cloakware is the Lab's lead corporate research sponsor.
A primary goal of the new Lab is to provide a focal point and resources for exploring new approaches to prevent reverse engineering and tampering of software, and addressing network intrusions and other software security problems plaguing corporations, content providers, network operators, software vendors, and computer users. The Lab will also offer training opportunities to Carleton University Computer Science students. "We are interested in foundational research to advance the body of knowledge around application security and software protection," said Dr. Paul Van Oorschot, Canada Research Chair in Network and Software Security at Carleton University and Director of the Lab. "Software applications have become the primary target for attackers. Understanding and quantifying the properties that impact the security and integrity of software applications is a critical, fundamental part of network and software security."
Dr. Van Oorschot is a leading research scientist and practitioner in the area of computer and network security, with particular expertise in authentication and applied cryptography. While Vice President and Chief Scientist of Entrust, Dr. Van Oorschot was instrumental in the development and advancement of Public Key Infrastructure technology. He holds 15 U.S. patents, has published numerous scientific papers, regularly serves on the program committees of top international conferences, and is co-author of the "Handbook of Applied Cryptography" - the standard reference on the subject. An advisor to business and government, he is a frequent public speaker on security. Working with Cloakware since 2001, Dr. Van Oorschot is now Principal Research Associate at Cloakware.
The Lab is a cornerstone of Dr. Van Oorschot's mission to build the first comprehensive, university-based and industrially-relevant research program on software and network security in Canada. "With the addition of the Carleton-Cloakware Lab, Carleton University will be able to continue to engage in leading edge research and offer the best infrastructure and capabilities in Canada in software and network security," commented Dr. Feridun Hamdullahpur, Vice-President (Research and International) at Carleton. "This will not only provide invaluable new knowledge and innovation to the IT industry but also attract and train top quality students."
"From Cloakware's inception, it has been an integral part of our plan to advance the software protection field through academic collaboration that complements our own internal research," said Alec Main, Cloakware's Chief Technology Officer. "The opening of this Lab specifically addresses the need for the academic community and business to work together to solve security problems. Such partnership provides the foundation for the development of new technologies and products that benefit corporate and government users. For Cloakware, this will fuel new product development focusing on digital content and intellectual property protection that directly affects businesses' bottom lines.
