Embark on a 20-minute sound adventure each time you listen. From 173 unique sound chapters, MONAHAN’S specially designed algorithm collages a selection of chapters for each listener. Over 30 diverse contributors have enriched MONAHAN with an eclectic mix of songs, poems, nature sounds, interviews and stories. By bringing together sounds by human and non-human beings, MONAHAN creates an ever-evolving experience. You can continually return to the artwork knowing that each listening experience will bring you something different. You may hear a chapter you’ve heard before, but this time it’s next to something new. Like the landscape that inspired this artwork, MONAHAN is always changing.
MONAHAN not only highlights the beauty of the wetlands but also prompts deeper reflections on our relationship with nature. Laura’s vision for MONAHAN was inspired by the Monahan Wetlands' rich diversity. The site is home to over 400 species, making it a beacon of biodiversity in a relatively small area. Her goal was to create a work that harmonizes with its surroundings, integrating seamlessly with the living plants and animals. By fostering an understanding of the interconnectedness of all life forms, MONAHAN invites listeners to engage in "deep listening," a practice of understanding and appreciating the environment around us.
Each sound chapter can be accessed by scanning a QR code with your smartphone on specially designed signposts placed along the wetlands' pathways. This auditory journey transforms each visit into an extraordinary experience. Although MONAHAN was created for a specific site, the artwork can be listened to wherever you go. Visit monahanpublicart.ca or scan a QR code and let MONAHAN transport you to a world where nature’s voice sings a new song each time.
