Today, Canada's Top 100 Employers named the City of Ottawa one of 2025’s National Capital Region’s Top Employer for the 14th year.
This repeat honour reflects the City’s commitment to support staff with their personal and career growth and create a fulfilling work environment where they can utilize their skills and development to make a difference in their community.
We asked some of our long-service employees to share their experiences working for this National Capital Region’s Top Employer. Here’s what Paola and Sylvia had to say:
Paola Parenti, Emergency and Protective Services Coordinator, has experienced that support in her 28-year career with the City. She first started her career as an administrative assistant with the City Clerk in the former City of Nepean.
“That’s very different work than I am doing now,“ reflected Paola. She credits taking part in a mentorship program for her career movement, which included opening the door to a position with the Paramedic Service project management team. Her career continued to progress with opportunities with Ottawa Fire Service and the Deputy City Manager’s Office.
“So, it was later in my career that I found ‘my place’ in the organization,” said Paola. “I'm fortunate that I get to know so many people, especially through delivering emergency management training. Not only do I get to work closely with City staff, but external partners like Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue and The Salvation Army,” added Paola. “And I love that I get to help communities in a time of need.”
“Sylvia started with the City at age 18 at Carleton Lodge, working part-time for 10 years and then acquiring a temporary, full-time position. Working at Carleton Lodge, Sylvia discovered her passion working with seniors which led to her return to school to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Gerontology.
“I chose my concentration because I really love what I do. I am very grateful that I can help our most vulnerable community members,” said Sylvia. “The creation of the Rideau Club, and adult day-program supporting those living with dementia is a highlight of my career.”
For new employees to the City, her advice is to experience opportunities, especially given the vast departments the City has.
“I had the most supportive program manager in my early days,” reflected Sylvia. “I try to be that for the next generation.”
Last week, Canada's Top 100 Employers also recognized the City as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers.
