No. 1 technogical disaster of last century is chinese dam burst in 1975.The dam was located in henan province. There was an unusual rainfall and the dam can not sustain the water volume. However the designer never thought the dam could fail and there is no preparation for it. 5 of 12 discharge holes were not functionning because of design flaw by then. The dam could not sustain the pressure and finaly bursted.
100,000 died in the flood. But then water brought disease. 2 weeks later, the water finally receded and the final death toll was 230,000. Chinese government has never mentioned this disater in any media.( I did not know it until yesterday.)
