How he is ranked
  • While no formal ranking exists, he is often mentioned in discussions of the greatest physicists ever, alongside figures like Einstein, Maxwell, and Newton.
  • Some sources suggest his theoretical work is more influential than that of some other famous physicists, like Stephen Hawking, and places him in the top 5 or 10 theoretical physicists of all time.
  • His legacy is further cemented by being the namesake for the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook University.

Major contributions:
Yang (with Tsung‑Dao Lee) proposed parity violation in weak interactions (1956), experimentally confirmed shortly after; foundational work in gauge theories, Yang–Mills theory (1954) which underpins the Standard Model; statistical mechanics and condensed‑matter insights. These are central, enduring advances.

Honors: Nobel Prize in Physics (1957, with Lee); membership in major academies; broad international recognition and influence on generations of physicists.

Longevity of impact: Yang–Mills theory is one of 20th‑century physics’ cornerstones, essential to particle physics, quantum field theory, and mathematics (geometry/topology links). Parity violation was a paradigm shift in understanding fundamental symmetries.

Yang-Mills theory has not received a Nobel Prize because it is still an unsolved mathematical problem, not an experimentally confirmed discovery. The Nobel Prize is awarded for discoveries, and Yang-Mills existence and mass gap is one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's Millennium Prize Problems. While Yang received a Nobel for his work on parity non-conservation, he did not win one for the theory he developed with Robert Mills, as it is still incomplete.

Why Yang-Mills theory hasn't received a Nobel Prize
  • It's an unsolved problem: The existence and mass gap for a quantum Yang-Mills theory is one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. A $1 million prize is offered for its solution.
  • Nobel Prizes are for discoveries: The Nobel Prize is generally awarded for fundamental, experimentally confirmed discoveries, not for theoretical work alone.
  • The theory is still being developed: The theory has mathematical difficulties, and it has not yet been proven that it describes a consistent, non-trivial quantum field theory that agrees with experiment.
  • Yang's Nobel was for other work: Chen-Ning Yang did receive a Nobel Prize in 1957 with Tsung-Dao Lee for their work on parity non-conservation in weak interactions, not for Yang-Mills theory.

Stephen Hawking never received a Nobel Prize because his work was primarily theoretical and required experimental confirmation, which was not fully available during his lifetime. The Nobel Prize is also not awarded posthumously
