The United States ordered a full evacuation of its citizens in Iraq as attacks by pro-Iranian armed groups within the country intensified.
According to reports by The New York Times (NYT) and others on the 14th (local time), the U.S. Embassy in Iraq announced on the same day that "armed groups linked to Iran have carried out numerous attacks targeting U.S.-related objectives, including diplomatic facilities, American companies, and hotels frequently visited by foreigners within Iraq," and notified all its citizens to "leave Iraq immediately."
As the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran enters its third week and shows signs of prolonged conflict, Iran is attempting to form a second front by inciting "Axis of Resistance" forces within the Middle East.
The U.S. Embassy had previously advised its citizens to "refrain from conspicuous behavior" as recently as the day before, but strengthened its response to a full evacuation order within a day.
The NYT assessed that this move signals the Iran war is spreading beyond national borders.
The U.S. evacuation order for its citizens came as armed groups linked to Iran continue to attack government buildings of the U.S. and its allies in Iraq.
On the 14th, a missile struck the rooftop helipad of the U.S. Embassy building in Baghdad, Iraq, and Kata'ib Hezbollah, an armed group supported by Iran, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Although several armed groups supported by Iran are active in Iraq, the Iraqi government has failed to properly control these groups.
Deborah Margolin, a senior researcher at the U.S. think tank Institute for Near East Policies, told the NYT, "Iran has made it clear that it and its proxy forces are targeting the U.S., thereby putting American citizens in Iraq at risk," and added, "As the war between the U.S., Israel, and Iran spreads, the dangers faced by Americans in Iraq are growing."
