President Trump has his name on golf courses, skyscrapers, Washington’s premier performing arts venue and a prescription drug platform, but now he can add an eponymous airport to that list.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Monday to rename Palm Beach International Airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The bill, which passed the Florida House and Senate in February, gives the state the authority to name major commercial service airports and includes a provision to rename the Palm Beach airport.
Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club is roughly 4 miles from the airport, and that stretch of road running from the airport to Mar-a-Lago was renamed President Donald J. Trump Boulevard in January.
The recently signed law is set to go into effect on July 1, subject to approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and rights agreements, according to the legislation. The FAA said that changing an airport name is a “local issue and the FAA does not approve airport name changes.”
The agency added that the FAA “must complete some administrative tasks to include updating navigational charts and databases.”
The legislation does not impact the airport’s three-letter code PBI, but Rep. Brian Mast has introduced legislation to change the code to DJT.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy took to social media to announce that the FAA is already working on changing the airport’s code.
Eric Trump, one of the president’s sons who also runs the Trump Organization, said that he was “proud to have played a small role in making this happen.” He thanked Mr. DeSantis, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and Florida lawmakers.
