Thank you very much Prime Minister Richard and Rachel. Thank you for bringing us together in unity in the spirit of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

And thanks to all of you and this growing crowd. I remember the first time I attended this prayer breakfast.

With then my boss the great Stockwell Day. There was about 300 people and I think there was a commandment from the front of the room to go forth and multiply.

And that was honored today. I think we have almost 2,000.

Prime Minister, I think it is very appropriate that you quoted Marcus Aurelius, although he wasn't much of a practicing Christian.

Stoicism and Christianity do share a common theme, which is to focus on what you can control and release all that you cannot.

Ultimately, the Serenity Prayer is obviously a Christian prayer, but it is very much a stoic one.

"God, grant me the courage to change the things I can, the serenity to accept the things I cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Now all of you have surrendered microphones to preachers, pastors, priests, and politicians, so now you have lost control of your entire daily schedule.

I am commanded by Richard to reflect on the theme of today's gathering, which is that you are not alone.

Indeed, in this room you're surely not alone. You are joined by people of various denominations and even faiths all here to mutually support one another in our faith in Jesus Christ.

I am also commanded to bring you readings from Hebrews 12:1-3:

"Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off anything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles."

Being a very simple prairie boy, I am going to interpret those words for what they say. Richard, this says "Be on your best behavior because people are watching."

I take this to mean that we as leaders are to live up to the highest possible standard.

In our parliamentary system, for example, we as leaders are meant to tremble every time we walk into the House of Commons.

Knowing that we will be held to account by our fellow parliamentarians, not out of vengeance or out of meanness, rather but out of a determination to hold ourselves to the highest possible standards for the people who are witnessing us.

But Richard has informed me that that is not the end of the story. Because it is not only the people on earth that are watching.

The term "great cloud of witnesses" suggests that there are many watching from above.

Those who came before us, who went through this journey of life, who were tempted by sin and faced the frailties of humanity, went on to paradise with their Lord and Savior and they are all cheering us on.

They're looking down upon us with our challenges, our shortcomings and our many determined efforts, and they're hoping that we will come through and follow the example that has been set forth by our savior.

The reading goes on: "And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us fixing our eyes on Jesus the pioneer and perfector of faith."

"For the joy set before him he endured the cross scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

He took joy in the suffering and the sacrifice that he would make on all of our behalf.

And therein lies the perfect symmetry of Christianity: there needed to be justice for all the sins of the world, somehow those wrongs needed to be righted.

We as frail humans were incapable of righting it ourselves and therefore the master of the universe gave us his son and he righted those wrongs on all of our behalf.

He took on his body and his physical sensations all of the brutality and the beatings that paid the price for all the wrongdoing we all have had.

And so in our frailty and our failings, in our joys and in our tragedies, we are not alone.

We have with us a mighty savior who gives us strength, Jesus Christ. Amen.

The other thing that I actually was really keen to talk about I just realized is um... oh that's little Valentina there she loves to be on daddy's shoulders.

How old is Valentina? Valentina is 7 years old. 7 years old and she's she's non-verbal. She's non-verbal yes. What does non-verbal mean?

She is autistic, she's on the spectrum. So um she her biggest the biggest difference between Valentina and other children is the ability to communicate verbally.

So we're working very hard on that she's making some encouraging progress but she does uh have some challenges in that area. She's um very acrobatic and rambunctious she loves to climb swing bounce jump.

And she is extremely affectionate and one of the superpowers she has is that whatever she does she does 100%. She's also 100% authentic.

Once kids get old enough to manipulate to get what they want they can put on acts and artifices, she doesn't do that she's a the real deal all the time.

Uh you know exactly how she feels because she indicates it and she's very blessed to have a a little brother Cruz who adores her.

I often hear parents talk about their concerns with you know someone like Valentina growing up in the world as non-verbal, you're not going to be here forever to protect her... how you think about the future?

Well a lot of things like one we will obviously have to build up a nest egg for her so that if she can't earn income she will have uh uh the resources for a great life after we're gone.

And second we're really hoping that there we forge a very permanent and um deep bond between her and her brother Cruz because he will be there. And he one of the things he says again and again is "my job is to protect Valentina from bad guys."

It's a it's a great instinct. How has it changed your politics?

It's reinforced my sense of um compassion for people who can't provide for themselves... I do think there's a very real role for government to help people who genuinely cannot provide for themselves, people who suffer from with disabilities being probably the best example.

It has reinforced to me that we have to also have policies that recognize the inherent worth of every individual. Too often governments have seen people with disabilities as just someone they have to care for but not someone who can contribute.

I believe that everybody has something to contribute and that we should try to unlock that in every human being... I believe she will do some kind of a job at some point in the future.

When you see somebody who might be different, like I see my daughter in that person... so compassion is about feeling what the other person feels.

An interesting range of emotions to be the father the parent of a autistic child... what what can you say to to the range of emotions you feel?

My wife was able to discern that there was something different about Valentina very early on... because she didn't make a lot of eye contact. So when we went for the diagnosis we were not that shocked.

And my message to parents of autistic children is just focus on what you can control. Get on to the things that you have to do, get a speech therapist, get the play structures in the house that they love.

With Valentina it's it's a it's a bouncy castle and a little trampoline and a lot of building blocks. And enjoy them like they they're she's so much fun like she's a fun little girl.

They call it autism because they're autot, they're in their own world. You can't force them to be in your world, you have to go into their world and reach them there and understand them.

So if she's having a meltdown it's not cuz she's a bad kid it's because she's going through a horrific sensation that we can't quite understand, so but you just have to embrace it all.
