Dear international students,

The Immigration Discussion Group (International Student Advocacy Group)
met last Friday for our second meeting, many thanks to those of you who
came out to the meeting. However, the turnout was not representative of
the total population (only about 15 students of 2060!). These are
important issues which many of you come to to talk to me about - here's
an
opportunity to work towards change. But - to do that, we need people to
get involved, you can't leave it to others to make change - this has to
be
a group effort!

To get up to speed on what we've been doing, a web page has been
created
(thanks Anup and Marsha)the url is http://intl.engsoc.org.

We will be meeting again next Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in 447 Tory
Building
(to those of you who I told 437, it's 447). Please come out and work
with
us to make your experience in Canada a more enriching and positive
experience.

without your voice behind us, we are not very loud. I would like us to work together as I believe that unless Canada Immigration hears your voice, change will be slow to come.

I got the same mail yesterday.I can't make it for the working reason, but I think it is a really good chance for us international students,especially Chinese students to get right and welfare that related to us. Contact with CUCSA(Carleton University Chinese Student Association) and get them there!

I will ask somebody else to be there on be half of me. By the way, would you please post the meeting result and the news after you have the meeting? Thanks!:thanks:

Dear International Students,

Laura posted a message last week in regards to an Immigration Discussion
group which was originally scheduled to take place this Thursday. Due to
an overwhelming response, we have had to reschedule and relocate the
meeting as outlined below:

When? Friday, January 23 from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Where? 210 Tory Building
Interested in attending? Please email Laura_Cohen@carleton.ca

Please note that this meeting is NOT an Immigration Workshop - if you have
general Immigration questions related to completing applications, etc.,
you should come to the International Student Advisory during our
Immigration Check-In Times which are as follows:

Mondays 10 am - 11 am
Tuesdays 11 am - 12 pm
Wednesdays 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Thursdays 12 pm - 1 pm (except for Thursday, Jan. 22 from 11 am - 12 pm)

Please read Laura's original message below carefully to understand the
purpose of this Friday's discussion:

In the past years, I have had discussions with many of you about
immigration concerns, off-campus employment, the difficulties in finding a
job after graduation because of immigration time limits and so forth.
Given that this is an issue that concerns all of you in one way or
another, I wanted us to meet to discuss these concerns and work together
on an advocacy plan. In the past, there have been efforts to bring
international students together to discuss concerns and to work on a
campaign to raise awareness particularly with immigration and I would like
once again to get this started. While those of us that work in this area
are constantly trying to raise issues, without your voice behind us, we
are not very loud. I would like us to work together as I believe that
unless Canada Immigration hears your voice, change will be slow to come.

BACKGROUND

According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), currently, over 100,000 international students are enrolled in Canadian post-secondary institutions (Citizenship and Immigration Canada. http://ww.cic.gc.ca [10 June 2001]). Despite this significant presence, there is little awareness of their experiences or recognition of their important contribution to Canadian society. The purpose of Voices at Work is to fill this vacuum by creating awareness about the difficulties encountered by international students in Canada. Despite the existence of a variety of organizations specialized in promoting international learning, such as the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CIBE) and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), the voices of international students have seldom been heard. Voices at Work is the first research of its kind, entirely realized by international students on international students. It provides a first-hand examination of the experience of international students in Canada as seen by international students. It voices the plea of international students to the Federal government to be given equal educational opportunities and living standards by removing the existing off-campus employment restrictions. Voices at Work attempts to paint a truer picture of international students in Canada. Their image is permeated with numerous stereotypes and generalizations based on assumptions about their wealth and social status that can negatively distort the perception Canadians have. Misconceptions generally stem from the fact that, among the basic requirements for obtaining a student authorization, potential international students are required to prove that they have enough money during their stay in Canada to pay for international tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation for themselves and accompanying dependents (Citizenship and Immigration Canada. http://www.cic.gc.ca [10 June 2001]). With international student fees at an average cost of $10,000 a year, all international students are believed to be coming from extremely wealthy families. The reality is that only a small number of international students are actually wealthy, while the vast majority are either sponsored by their middle-income families or talking out loans from their own governments, and struggle to get by on a daily basis (CBIE,1999).
