that sounds like a fun job. if you are pursuing to be a computer/network techie, that can be a perfect position that you can gain a lot of experience and learn a lot even from the first date you get involved.
Oxford Street is close to anywhere, as i used to live not far from it.
$53,646.00 to $67,363.00 is not bad at all for this kind of position in Halifax.

IT Support Specialist

This is a continuing position. IMB has a diverse IT environment consisting of MS Windows NT, 95, 98, 2000 and XP, MacOS, BSD and UNIX computer systems (Sun, SGI, DEC, HP, Linux). IMB includes the Institute's main laboratory on Oxford Street, the Aquaculture Research Station at Sandy Cove, the CISTI Halifax Branch, the HRB Client Services representatives, the IRAP Maritime Regional Offices and the Canadian Bioinformatics Resource. The total number of employees supported at IMB is approximately 115. In addition, a number of guest workers, students and visiting fellows, who also have access to IMB's IT infrastructure, are present at any given time. IMB's IT infrastructure includes over 350 hardware devices, a wide range of software and a network infrastructure which includes Intranet, Internet and voice infrastructures.
Your Challenge
Under the direction of the Supervisor, IT Services, this position provides computer support and systems administration of IMB's computing environment to enable staff to pursue research objectives as well as to provide adequate IT security and protection. Computer support includes configuration, deployment, maintenance and troubleshooting of existing and new IT infrastructure. Systems administration includes the administration of server and desktop systems at IMB. IT security includes, but is not limited to, data backup and archiving, virus protection, system integrity and availability, as well as many other measures to protect IT resources from unwanted access. The incumbent must be knowledgeable about current IT industry practices and study to remain current with the IT industry to properly support IT requirements at IMB.
Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates.
Education
The required level of knowledge and skill is usually acquired with a Bachelor's degree or 3 year Technologist's diploma specializing in Computer Science, followed by a minimum of three years experience in supporting and administering PC and UNIX computer systems and software tools and handling progressively more complex issues in a support environment.
Experience
This position requires 3 or more years of recent and relevant experience including: - Installation, configuration, and administration of Microsoft Windows desktop and server operating systems software; and Microsoft Office Professional applications software. - Support and troubleshooting of client workstation, server, peripheral hardware and associated software in a heterogeneous networked environment with respect to installation, operation and maintenance. - Computer security products including backup/recovery, imaging, and anti-virus software. - Experience with one or more UNIX operating systems would be an asset, as would one or more of A+, MCP, and MCSE certifications.

Relocation
Relocation assistance will be determined in accordance with NRC's directives.
Salary Range
From $53,646.00 to $67,363.00 per annum plus a terminable allowance of $176.00 per month. The terminable allowance is in effect until such time as a new collective agreement for the bargaining unit is signed.
