China President rolls dumplings with the poor
Wed 21 January, 2004 12:55
BEIJING (Reuters) - China's President has rolled dumplings traditionally enjoyed by the masses on the eve of the Lunar New Year as he lectured peasants on the virtues of a Party that served the poor and downtrodden.
Playing up a theme he has taken since becoming Communist Party chief in late 2002, Hu stuffed meat into dumplings on Wednesday in the impoverished northern province of Hebei, mingled with pensioners and urged officials to resist corruption.
Since assuming power, Hu and other leaders have pitched themselves as men of the people, a move analysts say aims to revive the image of a Party tarnished by high-level corruption scandals.
China Central Television (CCTV) showed a plainly dressed Hu smiling to peasants and a baby swaddled against the biting cold, as many of China's 1.3 billion people gathered to begin New Year festivities.
"The Communist Party is a party that serves the people whole-heartedly and the government is the people's government," Hu said as he made dumplings in the city of Zhangjiakou.
Hu also braved freezing temperatures to visit a local factory and urged local officials to champion the poor and resist the twin temptations of power and beautiful women.
Officials should "preserve the true colour of Communist Party members and act as servants of the people", he said in a cavernous room filled with Hebei officials.
China's leaders have put unemployment and social issues at the top of their agenda as they strive to preserve Party rule in a nation racing ahead with wrenching economic reform.
Tens of millions of workers once employed by defunct or ailing state firms have been laid off. Millions more are expected to lose their jobs in the coming years, raising the spectre of an ever widening rich-poor divide and social repercussions in the world's most populous nation.
