My personal take on this is -- YES, GO FOR IT.
Some reasons for going for (if I were you):
(1) Higher salary (who hates $$$, right?) and better opportunity for advancing your career,
(2) Nothing strange about changing jobs these days (I can imagine even your boss must have done so more than once; and if he has a chance to job boat, he would do the same),
(3) It might show that you are motivated and continuously look for challenges (since higher salary usually translates into more responsibilities), and
(4) If your boss is not open or understanding enough to accommodate your ambition, he is not such a good one to work for anyway.
But I would proceed with caution thou:
(1) Be honest with your boss, but ensure not to make him feel that you wanted to leave his unit because of some sort of unsatisfaction with him or the work he has assigned to you (i.e., don't make it personal to him),
(2) Try to make connection btw the new job and the one you are on, and
(3) Try to make the case that the new job is more challenging and you are ready to step up.
