Conclusion
First, here's my pick for which tool produced the very best version for each image. I viewed each final image at full resolution (not just the 400x400 crops) and flipped back and forth between them, carefully looking at every part of the image. I considered luminance NR, chroma NR, sharpness, detail retention and color retention. I narrowed it down to the best three tools for each image and then looked at them even closer before deciding on the best one.
This one was tough to judge, but it finally came down to Neat Image, Grain Surgery and Noise Ninja. All three produced almost identical results, but Noise Ninja did a slightly better job in retaining color saturation, and left slightly less artifacts behind.
As expected, this image proved to be the easiest to clean up. Once again Neat Image, Grain Surgery and Noise Ninja produced outstanding, basically perfect, results. After flipping back and forth for what seemed like hours I settled on Noise Ninja as the best. It left fewer artifacts behind, making the overall image look smother.
This image proved the most difficult for many of the the tools, they either left a lot of luminance noise in the sky or blurred the mountains too much. Again, the three tools that use noise profiles had the best results: Neat Image, Grain Surgery and Noise Ninja. I chose Noise Ninja again because it produced a slightly cleaner sky and retained more of the original image's brightness.
Neat Image, Grain Surgery and Noise Ninja are in a league of their own, consistently producing great results (the difference between analyzing the actual noise in the image, verses applying generic techniques to every pixel). The other products often did well in one or two of the images, but not all three. Noise Ninja is the newest of the noise reduction tools, and it is simply the best! I thought you couldn't get any better than Neat Image or Grain Surgery, but Noise Ninja did it. One thing I've noticed with my digital camera are these strange mottled patterns, and they become more preminant after noise reduction. Noise Ninja is the first tool I've tried that really manages to reduce the patterns, not make them stand out more.
My recommendations for PC users are:
