Introduction to Betta Fish Care : the Siamese Fighting Fish
They're called a beta, a betta or a Siamese fighting fish. These gorgeous, vibrantly colored fish are perfect for beginners in many ways.
Officially called Betta splendens, these fish can be found in just about any mall or pet store. They originally lived in rice paddies in the orient. This is why they tolerate small areas so well - while at times the paddies were flooded and they had ample water, at other times there were droughts and they had to live in very harsh conditions.
That's not to say they ENJOY being cooped up in tiny bowls with little fresh water to enjoy! They don't need a giant pond, but they are a fish and they like to swim around and explore their world. A 10-gallon tank should be quite fine for your betta.
Because they're tropical fish, it's good to have a heater on the tank, to keep the water temperature above 70F.
Bettas are indeed fighting fish - the males are very aggressive at defending their territory. Don't keep more than one betta in a given tank, and be cautious about what other fish you include in the tank. The long, flowy fins of the betta are often quite tempting for other fish to attack. If the other fish in the tank are also brightly colored, the beta might see them as competition.
There is special food available for bettas that they love. Just be sure to feed only as much as they will eat, so the extra food does not clog up the tank.
