<HTML>Happened to find this board recently. The style is very impressive, mild and the content is full of living flavour (Sheng Huo Qi Xi So even at my age, I am motivated to write something about the topic most touching to me here, 南京! I can see Nanjing in every stage of my life and there are innumerable dear memories along with Nanjing. Some of them can be exposed in the sunlight and are also the reflection of Nanjing's history in the recent dozens of years, from my perspective
When I was inside my mother's womb, I went to Nanjing the first time. Then there was only ferry. The latter famous Grand Nanjing ChangJiang brideg might be still in paper or someone's mind. About one year later, I crossed the ChangJiang again in my grand parents's arms to their home, Beijing.
The next time I crossed Changjiang to Nanjing was 5 years later, I was on my way to a small city near Nanjing after my mother went to the north and brought me back to my own home. This is the first time I saw Nanjing myself. My only memory is the the Nanjing Xi (XiaGuan) train station and the grand bridge. I has kept the photo taken on the bridge now. I believe then the bridge had just been finished.
Since then, in the next 18 years, I almost went to Nanjing every year and arrived at every scenery point there. But I was always there for just serveral days as a visitor, purchasing tour with parents, spring tour with classmates, on my way to/from Beijing visiting grand parents, and finally on my way to/from Universities. Many more dear memories during this period, one thing that can attrack the friends here is the comparison of Nanjing and Beijing. In reality, Beijing is a very "Tu3" city before the 80's. Not to mention Shanghai, it's even more "Tu" than Tianjin in the north. I think it was at least as "Tu" as Nanjing, maybe it's because they are both "Jing1 Cheng2" This was also the conclusion from my talkings with lots of uncles and aunts originated from every corner of China and travelled extensively during that period. It's only about the the ordinary people, not those communist officials. In the 80's, especially 90's, things changed a lot. China was open to the outside world, economy/money/business was becoming the focus of the society. Because China is still a highly power concentrated country, highly concentrated political power cohabits with the highly concentrated economical power, and they are concentrated in Beijing. This led to the super-natural development of Beijing in the recently 20 years! They are rather "Yang2" now. Please keep in your mind, this "Yang2" doesn't mean westernized. Oh, this's out of topic.
My recent fond memories about Nanjing are from 1995 to 1997. In the 1.5 years, I went to Nanjing at least 15 times and stayed there for almost half year. I think that's just a transitioning period for Nanjing. Who can tell me Nanjing's change since 1997? Thanks in advance! I finally enjoyed almost everything in Nanjing like a "Nanjing Ren", not just like a visitor. Roaming around the city day and night, I felt at home. I like "Nanjing Ren" very much! I want to mention the delicious food. I had been to a street full of restraunts, full of flavours, full of sensational enjoyments. There was a saying then "Eat at Ding Shan", one at FuZhiMiao, another at Ding Shan Hotel. I had been to both of them, really tempting, "fried live Jia fish/sheng1 chao3 jia3 yu2", "Qing Zheng Shi Yu", "DingShan ShiZhiTou"....Oh... Even in some street corner restraunt, you can enjoy "Stinky/Chou4 DouFu Hao1 Zhi1 Gan3", "??? leaves egg soup/a kind of leaves with special volatile flavour, was said to be able to clear inner-hot,who can tell me the name?"...Ohhhhhh...I can not stand up...
I'had been almost all over china, only Hangzhou and shanghai can be compared with Nanjin in food!
Last but not least, I want to say "Nanjin Ren" is the best among the people/residents of major cities of China. They are not necessarily native from Nanjing. The best people are always "new immigrants". Most of the best people I met in Nanjing are first or second immigrants, from Su Nan, Su Bei, from Shanghai. Oh, shanghai, I want to say the best "Shanghai Ren" are those who got all their education in Shanghai and left shanghai just after their graduation. They are a group of most professional, artsy, well-educationed people in China, at least in the 50's-70's. Period!</HTML>
