3,000 casualties in North Korea train crash
Last Updated Thu, 22 Apr 2004 11:53:36
SEOUL - There's a state of emergency in North Korea following the collision of two trains in which about 3,000 people were either killed or injured, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.
Eyewitnesses report the trains carrying flammable materials exploded at 1 p.m. local time at Ryongchon station, 19 kilometres from the Chinese border. Debris from the explosion landed in the town of Sinuju on the border between the two countries.
Yonhap reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il had passed through Ryongchon station nine hours earlier, after a secret trip he had made to China.
The casualties include Chinese workers living in the North Korean border region, reports South Korea's all-news cable channel, YTN.
