OTTAWA, May 20, 2004 ― The University of Ottawa unveiled today its goal in the most significant fundraising campaign in its history. “Our goals are ambitious and they include raising $200 million,” announced Gilles Patry, rector of the University.
Rector Patry officially announced the fundraising goal of the largest and most dynamic campaign in the University’s 156-year history. “However, just as important as our financial objective are our goals to raise the profile, enhance the reputation, build new partnerships and ensure our recognition as one of Canada’s truly great universities,” stated Patry.

The University of Ottawa will invest in three main areas: attracting and supporting motivated students, recruiting and retaining gifted researchers and educators, and rejuvenating labs and buildings.

The campaign is a response to marketing surveys commissioned by the university that show the school's reputation lagging behind its performance.

Among high school students in Ontario and Quebec, fewer than one in 20 was familiar with the university.

A number of universities ‑‑ including Dalhousie in Halifax ‑‑ are working on similar campaigns to compete with top schools such as Queen's, the University of Toronto, and the University of British Columbia.

The idea is to create a public image targeted at increasingly savvy potential students, their equally discerning parents, and benefactors looking to donate to universities.

In March, Carleton University spent $25,000 to produce a TV commercial that was broadcast nationally on TSN. The 30‑second spots ‑‑ which aired during a university basketball championship series ‑‑ featured Carleton's award‑winning men's basketball team.

The university has also started promoting itself as "Canada's capital university," linking the school's strengths in public affairs, journalism, and engineering with the two main engines of Ottawa's economy ‑‑ government and technology.

According to Cindy Boucher, Carleton's vice‑president of development, U of O's branding campaign will help reinforce the idea that Ottawa is a dynamic place for a university education.

"Our goals are very common. We want to offer higher education to anyone who wants to come here," she said.

Ms. Boucher also pointed out the differences between the two schools, suggesting that unlike Carleton, U of O is competing with universities that have medical and law schools.

Rather than being cross‑town rivals, she added, the two universities offer students joint programs in a number of disciplines.

Meanwhile, as part of its ongoing expansion, U of O has approved two new construction projects at its downtown campus, including a 240‑bed student residence.

The $18‑million building, on a purchased lot on Laurier Avenue, is expected to be completed next fall.

A second building ‑‑ at the corner of Waller and Stewart streets ‑‑ is expected to house a lecture hall, seminar rooms, and expanded facilities for the School of Management. The $35‑million project is to be finished by the fall of 2005.

Financing for the buildings will come from a combination of government grants and fundraising proceeds.
