Hi Guys,

I was just wondering what people are doing after EI runs out. Is there a
way to get it extended? Or are we doomed to get 4 part-time jobs to make
ends meet?

Thanks,

Dave

My EI ran out last week, I asked for extension - told them I have had 6
interviews in the last 3 weeks, so closer to a job just need some extra time
and also I couldn't afford my car and living expenses. They told me they
don't extend based on that, which really makes allot of sense...

They told me to go to the welfare office

Looks like part time work for now...

Good Luck to you Rick, What sort of line of work are you looking for ?
It's so discouraging, I'm out of work and have been for a while, it gets to
the point that I leave the house before my kids come home so they don't
think I'm sitting around watching god damn Jenny Jones, or god damn
Ophra. This has been the most humiliating year of my life, how far
we've fallen !

Good luck.

Don

My EI runs out sometime in late July (thank goodness it exists). One of the
things I was told just recently is that it's worthwhile to work part time
while you're on EI. You can make upto a certain amount of $ per week and
it'll extend your EI while not taking away from your base amount (in my
case, I think they said I could make upto $100 extra a week). I wish I would
have known about this earlier.

I'm currently awaiting a call back from the RCMP (the only interview I had
since I was laid off on Sept 11 - which was a pure coincidence). They told
me they'd get back to me in 3-4 weeks and, if I do get the job, I'd have to
wait at least 3 months to get my Secret clearence before I can start working
and making $. (I hear Secret can easily take 9 months nowadays so that
concerns me greatly.

In the meantime, I'm starting a Software Engineering degree at Carleton (I'm
an Electronic Technologist but worked in the software biz since graduating).
The courses I take are just in the limits of what's allowed while on EI (10
hours of "training" per week) so I can attend school and recieve my EI while
I wait for word from the RCMP. If I don't get the job at the RCMP, I'll go
to university full time in the fall (my EI will run out by then anyway...
student loans here I come!).

BTW, self-employment is definetly something to consider (someone else posted
a message about this) but it's not for everyone. The learning curve can be
steep you don't have a business background (i.e. for a programer like
myself). If you choose this path, there is a HUGE wealth of information and
resources online to help you get started. The Ottawa Entrepreneurship Center
(http://www.entrepreneurship.com/) is a good place to start.

And thats the catch. I have been more then qualified for a few jobs. But no
security
clearance then no job. Agencies dont seem willing to sponsor security clearance
applications anymore, and the dirt I hear from reliable source is that it takes
months
now, not weeks.

Those with it have much better chances at finding work.

EI does have a Self Employment option/thing for people on EI. Also,
there is a possiblity of support afterwards, but it has to be negotiated.
Info is available at their web site.

Cheers

Pete

Mine ended over 2 months ago. Just eating up my bank account for now. Next
month, I'll start on the RRSP's. Have a feeling the retirement years are
going to be in the poor house.

Can I ask what you all did for a living before EI? Specifically.

I was a chemical technologists for 15 years. After a layoff in 97, I went back
to school for an IT job. One the biggest mistakes I ever made in my life.
Currently trying to get back into chemistry. I'm already out-dated in the IT
department.

Any specific reason you want out of development? What direction would
you like to be going?

I don't think she run out of money, but as you know always burn money without incoming.... fear future.

She can not find a job as a labour. She tell me she is first time to do it. I understand.

for my understanding, her english is not good enough. It is very difficult to find a job with bad english (at least good enough to communicate with others). So go to ESL first.
If there is no income in her family, go ask social assistance such as welfare.

如果可能,告诉她可以去Food Bank领取免费的食品,如果她真的没有钱买食品的话。

As a normal labour, it is enough. Actually if it is difficult to find a job as a labour if nobody introduce her.

I am also proud because my boss will give 3 positions to chinese.

I know food bank, she know food bank. But if life is just supported by food bank.. she told me.

Canadian communities have food bank service. This service is to provide free food to people who need it. In Ottawa region, the food bank service is distributed through the agencies. If anyone needs food assistance, please contact nearest agencies closed to you:

Please visit
http://www.theottawafoodbank.ca/main.html

for a list of agencies.
