Seeking help from Nortel employee( about new graduate job application)

I am a Master student here at Ottawa.
I have sent out above 30 applications to Nortel on New graduate category, but got no reply.
Some of my classmates already got Nortel offer or Nortel interview.

Actually I was contacted by Nortel Alberta once recently but this is under experienced applicant category but not New graduate category.( I haven't send my application to them, they find me. I seems that i am not worthless :) )

I am wondering why I can't get any interview under new graduate category.

Maybe the reason is one of the following:

1. Don't have Nortel co-op experience.

2. Already has work experience at other company above one or two years.
( I know that IBM don't consider applicant who has more than 18 months experience at other company when they hiring new graduate)

3. Worry about oral English of Chinese applicant.

4. What I am doing is not match with the requirement.

Nortel employees please help me figure it out.
If it is the reason 2, I will not waste my time applying under new graduate category any more.

有可能是...第四条...看来你是有工作经验的...不会只投NORTEL吧...
 
1. Maybe, but not necessary;
2. Impossible --- you actually should get credit from it!
3. How can they know BEFORE an interview?!
4. Quite possible.

The real reason could be:

So in order to show you are good fit you should write up a resume cover letter that details in a "table format", HOW your background (school or real exp) fit in the items in their requirements.

Yeah, it is a tough market out there for entry-level job. But dont lose hope, I can tell you that I do see a good increase in the internal job postings of Nortel. And this usually will translate to more external job postings in the future. And in Ottawa general, there is a mini-tech boom right now. Especially related to Wireless. Get your hands on anything wireless (WiFi, UMTS, DSP algorithm, RF design, low level firmware or hi level wireless web apps) will get you far in the next 6 month.

I'll graduate soon and I am looking for job too.

Only send out a few resumes since last month (cann't find too much I could apply). I got two calls from Nortel recently, one is from a hiring manager and the other is from the team manager directly.Both positions are not in Ottawa. First one matched my previous working experience very well, but the hiring manager later told me they'll interview people locally first, so I still need to wait for further notification. The second matches my research field at school well, so I got the interview from over 200 applicants (told by the manager, no result yet).

I guess the important thing is how you match the job requirements, since there are so many applicants, and how strong you are in your own field. Don't worry about others. Just shapen yourself continuously on the field you want most, then there will be a position for you (and me).

Is it BTS related? I was told by them exactly the same as you.
It seems that we will compete with each other . :)
 
以后上学的人最好不要学Hi-tech专业。想来你们能进那个门本来就是很优秀的,可
是临到毕业却要200 - 300 个面试者里面挑一个出来。我知道这里有一些人学的是
商业,经济,财政或社会科学,在本科或研究生这一级时的成绩肯定不如你们,可
是人家现在很多都被政府部门或银行雇用了,co-op也很容易找,将来的工作也比你
们稳定。唯一不如你们的就是薪水低一点。但是,搞Hi-tech的倒底能做到多老的年
龄,恐怕不到50岁就要提前退休了吧。所以,你们学得很苦,出来工作也很苦,好
像是得不偿失。
