you can only ask your friend to track it from China. because when an international mail go through the Canada Custom, Canada Post will change the waybill number. since you do not know the new number, how can you check it in Canada Post.
I have the same experience,the only thing you can do is to wait or ask your friend to check it in China.

我2个月前在邮局改地址，一直没收到从原来地址forward过来的信，打电话到原来住址的邮局，居然告诉我刚刚收到我的换地址通知。我在电话里和他们吵了一大架，质问他们谁该负责任，后来又打电话到总部去complain

第二天，我收到了一摞贴了黄标签的从原来地址forward过来的信，有些还是5月份的――还好，我搬出去以后，那个apartment暂时还没有人住，我的信好像也都没丢。
