When buying new cars, we are normally offered the option of extending the default 3-yr manufacture original warranty for another 3 years by paying approximately $1200 more to get the peace of mind.
It turns out that there are some tricks here. When the dealer tries to sell you the extended warranty, they will not tell you that there is actually coverage scope difference between the original warranty and the extended warranty. They do give you what the two warranties cover and don't cover in very general terms; however, they will never tell you and present you with some written warning: The coverage scope for extended warranty has been narrowed. Their sales personnel just try to get you into the hook.
This has just happened to me recently. My car has just been in the period of extended warranty; and, a problem occurred. The replacement and cost is around $250. I did not know that there is coverage scope difference between the 2 warranties until then. This item is covered in the original warranty but not in the extended one.
Even though the dealer paid the repairs eventually after fighting, I am really pissed off by this sales-cheating behavior. I am still in the process of filing complaint against the dealer: Ask them to have my extended warranty having the same coverage scope as the original one in case of future problems during the extended warranty period.
My warning message is: Think twice before purchasing new car extended warranty. Ask the sales person specifically if the extended warranty has exactly the same coverage scope as the original one or ask for a written statement of similar nature.
