A 19TH CENTURY WEDDING FOR ALL TO ATTEND AT UPPER CANADA VILLAGE
Summer is the time for weddings, and this Sunday, July 18, Upper Canada Village will be offering visitors the chance to attend a true-to-life 19th Century Wedding. This annual staged event, each year with a unique cast of characters from the past, continues to be one of the Village’s most well-attended days of the season.
The Village’s attention to detail in recreating “the big day” may be one of the reasons for the event’s popularity. This year’s wedding will portray the union between Jeremiah Hunton, brother of the Lutheran Pastor in the Village, and Catherine Cook, daughter of the owners of Cook’s Tavern. The happy couple will be wed in an outdoor garden wedding at the Lutheran Pastor’s home, and the reception afterwards will take place on the grounds of Cook’s Tavern.
Visitors to Upper Canada Village on the day of the wedding will be able to meet members of both families as they re-enact getting ready for the afternoon wedding. Members of the Cook family will be setting up the reception tent, putting up decorations and clearing the barn floor for dancing. Visitors may also see the trousseau laid out in an upstairs bedroom in Cook’s Tavern. Starting at 12:30 p.m., the upstairs to Cook’s will be closed to the public so that the bride and her family can get ready for the wedding.
Some of the Cook’s wealthy relatives will arrive at the tavern by horse-drawn carriage around 1:15 p.m. The entire Cook wedding party will appear on the front steps of the tavern shortly after, to walk in a procession to the Lutherans’ in time for the ceremony at 1:30 p.m.
After the wedding, the new bride and groom will lead the wedding party, families and guests back to the tent at Cook’s Tavern for the wedding reception, toast, speeches and refreshments. Visitors will be invited to share in a piece of wedding cake and lemonade. Lively music and dancing will follow in Cook’s Barn.
Visitors are able to attend the 19th Century Wedding as part of their regular admission to Upper Canada Village. For more information, call 1-800-437-2233 (543-4328 locally) or visit our web site at
