$60/hr or more if your experience is very close to the job requirements.
Anything less than $40/hr is a rip-off.

the problem is, I can find 1000 people that eager to be
ripped-off. everybody can program, especilally millions in
india and china.

They may need you for 3 months then lay you off.

And a lot of work are outsourced to China, India, etc, where $40 CAD a hour isn't horribly low for those programmers.

No, I WAS talking about money paid to you.
Your employer would get at least twice that amount, and that's usually a body shop pricing. Larger agencies would charge even more to their clients.

I was a contractor and have been working extensively with contractors on different projects for the past 4 years. My feeling to the current job market in Ottawa is: it's definitely worse than what it was before the tech bubble bursted, but for qualified personnel, there are still quite some works. However except one or two people, EVERYONE I know has found a somewhat steady source of income since the burst.

Remember, being out of job is only a fact of life in North America, or anywhere in the world for that matter. Don't despair, but adjust your attitude.
