<HTML>Hi, all of you. I have been in Ottawa for half a year. Until now, I have no clear idea about my future. I was a English teacher in one university in china, and have some knowledge of French. I am not sure which major is suitble for me. I am pursaded by friends to study accounting or nursing in Alganquin, which will give me a relatively steady job. But I hold a little hope to be a teacher here. So, is there anyone with the similar experience as mine?please share me with your feeling and thought. And anyone can give me some guide? :chine: :chine: :chine:</HTML>

<HTML>There is little chance for you to be a teacher here, almost impossible.
As for accounting, too many people learn it, I don't suggest you to choose this subject. If you want to stay in Canada, nursing is a good subject, it can give you steady job, that's true. Otherwise, you can try MBA, as I know, two of my roommates and one of my freinds all find job this spring.
Good luck.</HTML>

<HTML>Thank you very much, green_grass. Now I give up the idea of being a teacher here. But would you show me more clearly the detailed information of Nursing. I mean the terms, or fee or future. I hear that OU accept the application for MBA without the score of GMAT. If so, according to what will an applicants be accepted? How about the TOEFL score for it? Is it necessary to be higher than 600? :hein?:</HTML>

<HTML>Hi, bonheur, since I am not learning nursing, nor MBA, I can't give you detailed information. You can search for the webs and find what you want. As I know, OU's MBA needn't TOFFL score over 600.</HTML>

<HTML>From my experience, you may want to try something frist other than just thinking. try part time job at shopping mall such like zellers. try to take a job class. try to talk to native people or anyone who can give you possitive information. try to be encouraged. half a year is just a settledown. you want to live here for all rest of your life, right? so try different things. just try it. and i bet you will find out what you want to do and what you can do. beleive me. you have power in hand.</HTML>

to Jingli

<HTML>Thanks, Jingli. You know, I have a son, who goes to senior kindergarten every afternoon, but just two hours and half. The period of time is so short that it is impossible for me to find some part-time. Now I do some volunteer work in my son's school, in his class or in the ESL class. Everything went smoothly until my husband's company was closed. Suddenly, I have to face a lot of things. Sending my son back China, so I will be freed to find a job, or go to school? Which job is steady, which major can bring bright future are my priorities when thinking. I need help and encouragement and more friends, thank you a lot.</HTML>

TO bonheur

<HTML>Now you've gotten the first lesson here in NA. Your huz lost his job. no income anymore. you have to sent your son back to his grandpa. that is life. that is north america. that is capitalism. that is free economy. the point is we have heard a lot regarding layoff and poverty when we were in china but we did not beleive it. we assumed that canada and usa are the richest country in the world. we assumed that we could get a steady job like what we were doing in china. we were right because we have human rights to make better life. we were wrong because we are not native canadian. everything is new to us.

you may want to change your mind first. no stable job here. everything could freely change without any preparation to you. you may want to talk to native canadian to understand their life style and start from there. try to be a canadian. try to make a plan of your daily life. that will help a lot i beleive.

i am pleased to know that you are volunteering. that is good for you. chances to talk to others are most important. communication is part of your life. do you find any fun? i am sure you have.

i have a friend who is doing part time job now. you know how many hours she is doing every week? 2 hrs on the weekend. i do not think you are dreaming of makeing fortune by part time job. you want get experience. learn new things. make new friends. and practise your managing ability. manage your time. manage your family. manage everything in your life. try to manage. try part time. try anything you can think of. try your best. try to get assistance from gov agency like Human Resources Canada.try to talk to people whoes job is to help you finding a job.also try to encourage your huz back to the job market.</HTML>

to Jingli

<HTML>Hi, thanks your guide. But where is Human Resource Canada? I feel ashamed that I know little about this city and rare acquaintances, for my little chance of going outside. There were few chinese in my husband's former company, so he just worked and worked. Until recently, I know this website for us to share feelings.
It is true that it is interesting to do some voluteer work. I talk with others and am talked. The teacher in ESL are very kind to me, it is a pity that I have to leave them from the next month.
I will be ok, just like many many new immigrants, it is true, life is not easy here. We can not live on the lap of comfort, we should struggle for ourselves, for our children.
What I want to suggest is that whether we--chinese in Ottawa--can share our stories with others.
:bye:</HTML>

Re: Bonheur

<HTML>Have you considered becoming an part-time English tutor for students from oversea - especially people from Asia? When I was in university, I always ask someone proofread my writing before I submitted to the prof. And people usually charge $ 10 to 12 /hour for proofreading or English tutoring.

I think you have advantage of becoming a successful English tutor becasue of your unique background and experiences -you know the difficulties and the tricks of mastering an second language. If you share your learning experience, others will be greatly benefited.</HTML>

To MWC

<HTML>Glad to hear this piece of news, thank you very much. If you know another chance, please inform me, ok? Or, how can I find or introduce myself to others? I can charge cheaper.</HTML>

Re: To MWC

<HTML>Normally, people put advertisment on univeristy's bulletin boards. There are bulletin boards everywhere in universities. As for the English tutoring service, you may want to put your advertisment in popular areas such as library, student building, bookstore, cafeteria, and academic buildings where popular subject are being taught. From my experience, economic & business are the most popular undergradute subject for students from oversea. Some universities have designated classroom for ESL course, and this would be the good area to put your advertisment.

I encourage you to go visit the universities & colleges in ottawa area. Pay attention to the bulletin boards (these boards are generally located inside buildings), as you could tell, different areas (buildings) of the university will have different advertisment, and generally, the contents of the advertisments will reflect the majority population of that building. Please also note that some bulletin boards are reserved for academic information purpose only.

Hope this help.</HTML>

To bonheur:
I came arcoss a message in this forum. Someone is looking for a way to improve his English. Please refer to ALex's posting "可以帮个忙吗?" in "寒窗枫景".
Just like Alex or other people does, you can start put your tutoring service advertisment in this forum.

You can try to offer private English tutoring service to high school or college students. I used to tutor 3 Taiwanese girls French, $10/hour, 2 hours/night and at least 4 times a week when I was a student back in Montreal. I can't say for sure how good the market in Ottawa is, but many kids from Taiwan rely on private tutors extensively, so maybe post your ad in the Chinese newspapers or any public places where it might attract Chinese immigrants, i.e. CU or OU ESL buildings, Ottawa-Carleton School Board, etc. For detailed addresses, check the yellowpages.ca or canada411.com. Good luck!
