Dear International Students,
International Student Orientation (ISO) is just a little over a week away, and we need YOUR help to make it the best orientation ever. The success of two events ?the International Student Potluck and the Peer Panel Discussion ?depends entirely on the involvement of returning international students. This is your opportunity to welcome new international students and pass along tips and advice to help make their transition to life at Carleton and in Canada easier. If we don't have enough volunteers by Tuesday, August 31, it could result in the cancellation of these two great events.
As many of you recall, the ISO plays an important role in the overall
international student experience. Although Laura and I provide new
students with a lot of information through ISO workshops, nothing can
compare to the perspective that you all ?as international students
yourselves ?can provide to our incoming students. Contributing a small amount of your time to one (or both!) of these events will have a significant impact on our new international students?Carleton experience!
All the best,
Jennifer Warren
ISA Program Assistant
1. International Student Potluck ?Show off your culinary skills!

What? Do you think that you have a traditional dish from your home country that everyone would love? Do you think it could be a contest-winning dish? Join the International Student Advisory in welcoming our new group of international students to Carleton by providing a wonderful sampling of meals from around the world at our annual International Student Potluck.
If you would like to participate, please send an email to isa@carleton.ca with the name of your dish by TUESDAY, AUGUST 31 . The first twenty students to confirm their participation in the potluck will be eligible for a $10 reimbursement for the cost of the ingredients for their dish.
Everyone attending the International Student Potluck will be given a
ballot to vote for their favourite dish. The student whose dish gets the most votes will win a fantastic Canadian-inspired food prize!
2. Inside Carleton ?Peer Panel Discussion
When? Tuesday, September 7 from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm
Where? 213 Residence Commons
What? If you think you have some great advice that you could pass along to new students related to life at Carleton University as an international student, then this session is for you! New students will be given the opportunity to ask returning Undergraduate and Graduate students any questions that are on their minds regarding everything from the best place to grab coffee to strategies for surviving culture shock. This will be a popular session, so if you are willing to share your experiences to help ease the minds of incoming students, please be sure to join us! To confirm your participation, please email isa@carleton.ca by TUESDAY, AUGUST 31.
3. World Trek Continues?
Last year marked our second year of World Trek. World Trek is an
opportunity for international students to share their country, culture/s, food, history, music and more with the Carleton community through lunch hour presentation once a month, September to April. Over the past two years, we have had presentations from Uruguay, Egypt, India, Kenya, Turkey, Argentina, South Korea, Germany, Jamaica, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, and Nigeria. It is a very popular program and people are already asking which countries will be presented next year! We are a community of 120 countries, so there are many more countries that can take us on a World Trek journey! There is an honorarium and all food costs are covered by the ISA. At the moment we are looking for countries to be presented in October, November, February, March, and April. Please email isa@carleton.ca if you are interested in presenting ?don't miss this opportunity to share your country with Carleton!
