MONTREAL (CP) - Bombardier Transportation has been selected by the Chinese government to negotiate a rail equipment contract worth a reported $4.5 billion Cdn.

A Bombardier spokeswoman said Monday that its Chinese joint venture has been selected to provide 140 passenger trains, called electrical multiple units. Lydia Dufresne did not give the value of the project, part of a large rail modernization program, but Japan's Kyodo News reported the value is 380 billion Japanese yen, about $4.55 billion Cdn.

China's official Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday that China's Railway Ministry has awarded contracts for upgrading key railway lines to six firms in a $15.8-billion Cdn project to double the speed of trains on five railway lines to 200 kilometres per hour.

Other major bidders selected include Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan and Alstom SA of France.

Dufresne said Bombardier's joint venture, Sifang Power Transportation in Shandong Province, is expected to negotiate a firm contract by the end of this year.

Dufresne said Sifang Power Transportation, one of three Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B) joint ventures in China, makes passenger rail cars.

Bombardier Transportation already manufactures in Europe the self-propelled electrical multiple units, that have a top speed of 200 km-h.

The Chinese program is to upgrade 2,000 kilometres of track because of a lack of capacity for passenger and cargo rail transport.
