Carleton, Ottawa U remain near bottom in Maclean's report card
By MEGAN GILLIS, Ottawa Sun
NEITHER of Ottawa's universities received capital grades in Maclean's latest report card of Canadian universities. But Carleton University did get solid marks in a first-ever study of recent grads, said Maclean's editor Ann Dowsett Johnston.
It's also doing well enough to climb the rankings amid a funding crisis, she said.
The University of Ottawa, however, has work to do.
While the U of O remained 12th of 15 medical/doctoral institutions, Carleton tied for ninth -- up from 10th -- of 11 comprehensive universities.
"It's very, very hard to move up one if you're an Ontario university," noted Johnston. "Funding is tough and to move a position is difficult. Last year, all but three Ontario universities fell or stayed the same."
CASH CRUNCH
Ontario universities have faced three years of record enrolment with the lowest funding in the country.
Across Canada, cash per student has never been lower.
In a survey of more than 12,000 recent graduates, students everywhere say universities are starved for cash, with most complaining about too few student services, library books and extracurricular activities.
But a majority still say university benefited them.
More than three-quarters (77%) of Carleton grads said their university experience improved their lives.
That matches the national average -- a good-news story in itself, Johnston said.
University of Ottawa grads weren't so positive, with 70% saying their university experience improved their lives.
Carleton is at the head of its class in the proportion of its budget going to scholarships, but ranks dead last in senior class sizes and has a poor reputation among movers and shakers.
LOW GRADES
The University of Ottawa ranks third in overall operating budget and fourth in cash devoted to student services.
But it has students with low entering grades and trails in alumni support, books and international student awards.
Spokesman Bob LeDrew said the university has a higher budget because it's a bilingual school.
What's really hurting the university's ranking is its second-to-last score for reputation, LeDrew said.
That's something the university is countering with a "branding" campaign.
"It's something we're working very hard on as a university," he said. "It's a building process."
Universities topping the survey include St. Francis Xavier, the University of Waterloo and, for a 10th year, the University of Toronto.
