Nortel stock was up 3.8 percent at $3.30 in pre-market trade on Inet on Wednesday.
Earlier this month, Nortel said it overstated revenue by $3.1 billion in 1999 and 2000 and that it was in talks with the SEC over accounting matters. The overstated revenue will largely boost sales in later periods, but $250 million will be permanently erased.
Analysts suggested that the response from the New York and Toronto stock exchanges may reassure investors, but it was not entirely unexpected. Delisting Nortel is seen as unlikely because of the size of the company and the volume of trade.
If Nortel fails to file its 2003 results by Dec. 30, the New York exchange could begin a review of its listing status, the company said.
In such an event, the exchange could permit Nortel securities to continue trading for another three months, it added. The exchange would consider the likelihood that Nortel would file its 2003 statement in that period, its "general financial status," and the frequency of its status updates to the market.
"A big consideration would be: are they likely to file in that period," said a hardware analyst, who asked not to be named. "We believe they're going to file within three months of Dec. 30 ... that leads me to believe the NYSE is going to, certainly, give them a grace period."
