Draft budget to propose property-tax increase

OTTAWA - Staff at the city of Ottawa will unveil a draft budget this Wednesday that includes some cuts and a tax increase of 4.4 per cent.
Council asked for a draft budget that limited any tax increase, but the document is only the starting point.

Coun. Alex Cullen thinks that, when the dust settles, the tax increase for 2005 will be closer to six per cent because the draft doesn't include such items as improvements to paramedic service.

Other councillors say they'll fight to make sure the increase is less than 4.4 per cent. Coun. Maria McRae says a final tax rate as high as 6 per cent would be a failure.

The draft operating and capital budgets will be tabled at council on Wednesday.
