Bingo! For a work friend, I think $30 is enough. For an OK friend, perhaps $50 per person if you get invited to the reception, maybe a little less if you are not going to the reception. For a real friend, well sky's the limit.

$50 per person at least if you are going to the reception, that's only enough to cover the meal alone usually.
If not going, then $20 $30 is enough for work friends.
Best to ask wheather they have gift registry, buy it off there is better than a wild guess
