I can't believe as a Ph.D you still make your decision based on
the reputation of school. Universities in canada are all similar plus
your supervisor is much more improtant than your school.

it's University of Waterloo, thank you very much for your comments!

However, how to tell a professor is good? and how much he will affect your future, like job hunting after graduation?

Did you get the offer yet? I don't think they issued that so early.

Is UW sucks

Can you give some evidence for saying Eng PHD in UW sucks? I believe you didn't draw your conclusion just based on the Macleans categorized ranking. And it will be more persvasive if you are familar with the programs in some other universities.

..Eng PHD in UW sucks! UW is excellent in Math realted subjects..furthermore..only in its undergradation department...

UW is not considered as a typical university who could provide PHD degree...in any ranks..it is considered as a Master/BA university...

Maybe you'd better try UT,McMaster or sth.

Best bet is to attend his/her lectures (graduate/undergraduate level) to get a feeling of this professor's ability in teaching and his reputation.

Talk to his/her current and previous graduate students, and get some feedback regarding the professor's academic knowledge, and the willingness to teach. This is important, some professors are very busy with his consulting jobs outside of their universities, and you hardly find them in the universities.

Research the professor's funding sources ( who are the people funding his/her research?) This will indicate that whether this professor has reputation in is his field.

Research the professor's personal achivements, as such teaching awards, Industrial membership such as Fellow of IEEE, Canadian Research Chair, and etc..

Waterloo is not very academic, but quite practical. It has strong link with industries. Therefore, it might be not the best choice for phd program.

what does the position of Canadian Research Chair really mean?

Canadian Research Chair is established and funded by the Canadian government to promote the scientific research in various fields. Each university has an allocate numbers of research chair positions. There are two types of research chairs: Tier 1 and Tier 2.
Tier 1 chairs appointed to outstanding reserachers whom are the experts (world leaders) in their field.
Tier 2 chairs are the second class below Tier 1.
