$8.1 Million Allocated for Affordable Housing in City of Ottawa
OTTAWA, November 5, 2004 ― The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario, along with the City of Ottawa, today held a press conference to announce the allocation of more than $ 8.1 million to help fund six pilot projects that will create 300 units of affordable housing for low-income people in Ottawa.
The announcement was made by Marlene Catterall, MP for Ottawa West-Nepean, on behalf of the Honourable Joseph Fontana, Minister of Labour and Housing, and Jim Watson, MPP Ottawa West-Nepean and Minister of Consumer and Business Affairs, as part of $8.7 million allocated today under the Canada/Ontario Affordable Housing Program. MP Marlene Catterall, MPP Jim Watson and George Bedard, representing Ottawa Mayor Bob Chiarelli, were present at the event.
"This announcement is a positive step in moving to address a critical need in this part of the province," said MP Catterall. "300 families will have access to a new home and this represents a tangible demonstration of our commitment to invest in affordable housing for Canadians in need."
"Affordable housing is a priority for the Government of Canada and we are very pleased that our partnership with the province and the City is helping more people to have access to a quality and affordable housing, said the Honourable Mauril Bélanger, MP for Ottawa-Vanier and Minister responsible for Eastern Ontario.
"This allocation represents a significant step in addressing the need for more affordable housing in the City of Ottawa," said Mr. Watson. "The province is committed to providing more affordable housing for needy people across Ontario."
"Ottawa has the most aggressive affordable housing program of the province of Ontario," said George Bedard. "This is another example of how three levels of government can work cooperatively to address affordable housing in our city."
The $8.1 million allocation to the City of Ottawa includes:
$918,000 for a 34-unit project at 1400 Coldrey Avenue in Ottawa. The project is sponsored by the Agudath Israel Congregation Non-Profit Homes Corporation. The units will be occupied by lower income families with children and single persons. Tenants in 10 of the units will pay rent geared to their income.
$2.24 million for an 83-unit project at 750 March Road in Ottawa. The project is sponsored by Blue Heron Cooperative Homes Inc. The units will be occupied by lower income families with children and single persons. Tenants in 21 of the units will pay rent geared to their income.
$1.62 million for a 60-unit project at 380 Somerset Street West in Ottawa. The project is sponsored by the municipal non-profit corporation, Ottawa Community Housing Corporation. The units will be occupied by lower income families with children and single persons. Tenants in 36 of the units will pay rent geared to their income.
$1.68 million for a 62-unit project at 27-43 Meridian Place in Ottawa. The project is sponsored by the Nepean Housing Corporation. The units will be occupied by lower income families with children and single persons. Tenants in 37 of the units will pay rent geared to their income.
$756,000 for a 28-unit project at 259 St. Anne Avenue in Ottawa. The project is sponsored by the non-profit group, the John Howard Society. The units will be occupied by lower income single persons.
$891,000 for a 33-unit project at 450 Churchill Avenue in Ottawa. The project is sponsored by the non-profit group, the Ottawa Salus Corporation. The units will be occupied by lower income single persons.
Today's federal and provincial allocation will be complemented by more than $7.6 million in City of Ottawa financial incentives.
In the City of Ottawa, the Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), has contributed $7.5 million through the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement.
To further support residents of the 6 new projects, the City of Ottawa has allotted 104 rent supplements under the province's Strong Communities Rent Supplement Program, administrated by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
The pilot project is part of a commitment that will create affordable housing units in Ontario. This partnership combines Government of Canada funding of $245 million with matching contributions of the Government of Ontario, municipalities and other private and non-profit partners.
