OPINION At the UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY - STRIKE COED - Update on April 1, 2005, 15. 30

At the time of a held special meeting Friday April 1, 2005, the Commission of the

studies of the UQO ruled on the validation of the activities of formation of the

quarter of winter 2005.

Initially, the Commission of the studies solved to support the claim coed relating to

the reform of the mode of loans and purses and to express with the government of

Quebec, the urgency to act to ensure the universities, and particularly the UQO, the

necessary resources to ensure the conditions of a university formation accessible and

quality to the three cycles.

The purpose of this meeting was also to make provisions for the possible prolongation

of the quarter in progress, if the strike of the students were to continue.

In short, the following measures were adopted:

---- If the strike ends at the latest on April 11, 2005, there will be prolongation of the quarter of winter 2005 between the 25 and April 29, and this, at a rate of one day for each day of strike held between the 5 and April 11 inclusively.

---- If the strike continues beyond April 18, 2005, the quarter of winter 2005 will be prolonged on the same basis as described above, and the quarter of summer 2005 will be cancelled.

---- The official texts of these resolutions are available on line while clicking here.

The next special general assembly of the general Association of the students (AGE) of the UQO is envisaged Monday April 4, to 6 p.m., the agora of the Lucien-Brault house. On this occasion, the students will be able to again decide concerning the stop or the continuation of the strike.

。。。:smokin:

MONTREAL (CP) - The Quebec government and striking university and junior college students have announced an agreement in principle to end a strike over cuts to student grants.

Quebec's education minister announced on Saturday that $482 million would be reinvested in the grant programs over five years.

The extra money will come from the federal Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation.

"I'm happy for students," Education Minister Jean-Marc Fournier said at a news conference. "It's proof it can work when we have a collaborative effort with Ottawa-it can work for all Quebecers."

About 180,000 students went out on strike five weeks ago to protest cuts to the $103-million grant program.
