I am a Trial Preparation Assistant working in the Identity Theft Unit of the
Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Charlie Mei, a resident of New York
City and former Ebay subscriber, has been arrested and charged with identity
theft, grand larceny and other charges relating to a fictitious Ebay account
established by Mr. Mei under the name Jai S. Mai. Between 2001 and 2005,
Mr. Mei sold items on Ebay using the screen names Bandaiusa, Charliesfex,
Coolio8900, Beautifulxlife, Kenmasida, Athenasnk and Paylessnogang,
requested payment by check and deposited the checks without mailing the
items purchased.
If you were the victim of Mr. Mei's fraud, please reply to this
email and include the following information:
1. If you bid on an item posted on Ebay by Mr. Mei and, if so, which screen
name he used;
2. When the item was purchased;
3. The item that you bid on and how much you ultimately paid for the item;
4. How you paid;
5. If you paid by check, who the check was made payable to;
6. The address that you mailed the check to;
7. Whether the item was received and, if so, whether or not the item
conformed to your expectations;
8. Your phone number and fax number so that we may contact you with
questions.
Additionally, if you purchased items from Mr. Mei and received the
item purchased, please send an email informing us of the date the item was
purchased, the method of payment, whether the item conformed to
expectations, how long it took before the item was received by mail and
whether or not the package contained return address information or other
information identifying the origin of the package.
In lieu of testifying in the Grand Jury, we will be faxing or
emailing depositions to the victims among you. If we have your phone
number, we will be contacting you by phone shortly. If you do not wish to
send an email, please call us at your earliest convenience and we can
discuss the matter over the phone. You may contact Assistant District
Attorney Christopher Davis at (212) 335-3041.
Sincerely,
Yamini Laks
