Making patio is a very labor-intensive job...but it is simple, as long as you don't make the stairs (you can buy kits to do the stairs for you), no tricks..

You can reference Fei Mao's post, all the procedures listed there..one lesson I learnt when doing my own (I actually hired someone do it for me), don't use the big stones such as those 2ft by 2 ft slabs, too heavy, very hard to grade or level them...

Depends on what material you are going to use for your patio, different materials require different tools.

Tools Required:
-Wheel barrow
-rake
-level
-string
-tape measure
-shovel
-a plate compactor (rent from Home Depot)
-guillotine and/or masonry saw (sometimes called a diamond saw, rent from Home Depot)
-gloves
-safety glasses

Materials required:
-gravel or G.A.
-stonedust
-edge restraints (spikes)
-pavers (actual interlocking stones) or flagstones

Here are some good info on planning and installing a patio. Bear in mind that this is from the paver company Unilock, so just ignore their brand specific products.

Go Canlok (950 Moddie) and have a look first...they are the certified distributor of Unilok (see Jianjian's post)...then you can get a feeling...
