Should I belive my own experience? My parents got the VISA this May, from the Embassy of the USA, Ottawa. The interview was very easy, however, I have to tell you that I spent time and prepared very well for the interview.
I have no problem if you would rather to be "right" than win, and only mislead yourself. There must be something that you and your friend are not sure about in your friend's case. Don't assume that your friend really understood the situation, if he did, the result could be different.
If you can not dig out the truth, better to ask question instead of giving suggestion. That's the way to make progress.

The scenario of being kicked out by security is very rare. It's normally happened to those who are always "right". better not to use a special case as an general example. even the story belongs to your friend, it's still second hand. it's hard for you to distinguish fact and perception. keeping talking about something you don't really know about does not do anything good for you or others.
Here is the my way: follow instruction, prepare all the documents carefully, attend interview on time.... disappointed? there is no tip because there is no tip required. All those who can make it will tell you it's easy. The fact is they made it easy. That's all I can say.
