Kathryn Gannon, also known as porn star Marilyn Starr, was sentenced on Wednesday to three months in prison for using insider information on stock trades.
Gannon, aged 33, told reporters she was surprised by the sentence, but said she was a ”tough chick” and the prison time would only help to promote a movie about her life that's in production.
"There's no fear here. I'm from Canada and I can handle it," she said.
Gannon pleaded guilty in June to two conspiracy counts relating to her use of inside information she got from James McDermott Jr., former head of Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.
Prosecutors said she earned about $80,000 in illegal profits from the trades. Gannon said she had spent $500,000 on her legal defense and is now completely broke.
The case broke in 1999 when Gannon was charged with McDermott and second lover Anthony Pomponio. She fled to Vancouver before she could be arrested in the United States.
McDermott was president of Keefe, Bruyette, an investment bank specializing in bank mergers, from 1997 until 1998 when he became chairman and CEO. He resigned in 1999.
