An estimated 300 jobs are being cut from a call centre in Bells Corners by U.S. PC giant Hewlett-Packard as it continues to integrate operations following its takeover of rival Compaq Computer.
Workers responsible for handling inquiries from Canadian customers were informed on Thursday that their work will be transferred to a new call centre in London, Ont.
The London centre, run by Solectron subsidiary Stream International, will handle work for a number of clients and eventually have a staff of 900.
HP would not confirm the number of jobs affected by the move.
The Compaq call centre once employed as many as 1,700 in Ottawa and Gatineau. Thursday's announcement is expected to reduce the workforce to as little as 400.
