Local software firm Espial Group Inc. has laid off 20 staff, former employees tell the Ottawa Business Journal.
Former employees say the company laid off 20 software developers last week as the market for its data-management software continues to stagnate. The product allows wireless providers to create specific and deliver specific services according to market demand. The software also has applications in the emerging pervasive Internet field.
According to the last Technology Industry Guide, Espial employed 105 people. This round of cuts would bring the total number of employees at Espial to 85.
The company was founded in 1997. In the last quarter of 2001, Toronto-based venture capital firm VenGrowth Capital Partners invested $5.1 million in the software company as part of a larger Ottawa-wide VC sweep, which included seven other local technology firms.
Company officials did not return phone calls Monday.
