1. As a general rule, buy in bulk
Stock up on office depot hilroy paper for 0.15
Stock up on notebooks (think it's 0.20 at staples, look on flyer instore)
Stock up on everything! Buy bulk printing cards.

2. Like chips or junk food? try buying cheaper bulk food (instead of branded and wrapped) like cornchips (tastes great!) or mixed nuts/almonds/pretzels

3. Shop at superstore or walmart instead of expensive safeway. If you're gonna one stop shop, shop there.

4. Before you throw away that empty shampoo or conditioner bottle (try 2 in 1 also) fill it up with water and mix it and use it, it works just fine!

5. For shaving, just use a cheap shaver, add soap to your face and soap to the shaver and shave. Works like magic and won't get infections! Saves on shaving cream and electric shavers and aftershave

6. Use bar soap, much cheaper than liquid soaps or bottled body wash

7. get a student account and stop paying for fees at the bank. You'd be surprised how students don't take care of their finances (i've worked at royal bank). If you only got the big 5 around you, then find a cheap one. Otherwise, try a credit union like Coast capital savings in Vancouver/victoria, free for students free for adults! Also President's Choice Bank

8. Use your credit card whenever possible. Why? credit history, ease of use, obtain points, no fees, grace period. Only use the money you have. If you really can't control it (I still don't understand why) then stick to your bank card. Get something with points and no fees like CIBC Dividend visa, RBC rewards (no fee one), RBC Esso points, a student credit card, or something along those lines. Also, Ebay card, students can apply, now promoting free jacket $92 value. Cashback 1% US!

9. Try travelling using your prepaid bus pass (don't let the university take your money for nothing!) Try biking! You could get a scooter for under $5000. Otherwise, try buying fuel additives to save on gas. Recommend SeaFoam over fuel additives. Also, when you travel by car, don't go fast or slam on the brakes. you will save on car repair because of fewer brake and tire replacement. You will save on gas because higher speeds/acceleration requires more gas.

10. Avoid spending unnecessary money. Stick to your food card (for rez). Bring lunch whenever possible! Sandwiches, 1.49 michelinas at walmart. You'll save tons. Average meal is around $5 elsewhere.

11. Don't get a laptop, it's unnecessary unless you can afford the convenience . Read the thread about laptops. Universities provide plenty of tools for you to do well, because uni's are designed to meet the rich and the poor ppl's needs, so use 'em!

12. Get a part time job only if needed . Builds resumes and pays the tuition.

13. Get student price cards and discounts and ALWAYS pay the student pricing.. like mini golf courses or museums. Recommend ISIC card (free for certain universities), get all your points cards too, Airmiles, Saveonfoods, Safeway etc. Don't you just hate it when CSR's ask you if you have the card, and you don't?

14. Recycling old notes or handouts? STOP! When you do assignments, you need scrap paper. Instead of getting a new/nice 8.5x11 hilroy, use those old notes and recycle them after BOTH sides are used. Keep the fully blank paper for printing course notes!

15. If you're one of the more fortunate ones, get a mortgage instead of paying rent. Must be 19. Mortgage is the same as rent nowadays. Pay into yourself equity instead of giving the landlords money!!!! The ultimate savings. For mortgages, try ING or a credit union instead of the big 5. If you must, then go to a bank you have relationship with and bargain with them. The personal bankers will decrease the rate!

16. Utilize the no interest student loans, even if you're working or rich. You could put the money you have, or even part of the student loans, into a savings account and earn interest. You'll get less student loans, buy money is money! And don't spend it.. save it in ING or something. And if you must put in GIC, bargain with the personal bankers! They will adjust, if not, threaten to leave. You are a student and you are valued the most because of your long term stay with the bank and the fees they charge you for a longer period. Act like a big business customer!

17. Don't buy stocks or mutual funds now. Students shouldn't be taking on any risks, since they're already in debt. Keep the money to near cash for liquidity like ING. Stocks are not for you yet.. you could lose your shirt.

18. cellphones or other tech stuff? go for the student deals posted in hotdeals. If you're buying anything expensive, ebay usually is the cheaper way. Recommend studentphones.com and studentminutes.com

19. Obtain and keep and organize coupons. Don't let them expire and only buy if needed, like 50 cents off soysauce.. and you need to stock up. Organize by month of expiry, look on save.ca for coupons

20. like watching tv or movies? There should be a shared tv in rez or other buildings. Avoid the movies, $10!! Either borrow from others or rent. I didn't say this but you could download (it's officially legal in Canada to DOWNLOAD ONLY, not upload). I learned this in my Software Engineering class (Computer Ethics -- Seng 400). Unless someone presents a link to a law from a legit website, download is legal in Canada. If you don't like risk, go to cheap movie days or your local university theatres.

21. Sell all your old stuff on ebay or newspapers, or the university bulletin board! Trade books and posted books wanted or for sale on the university bulletin or amazon. See who gives you the right price! eBooks can also be purchased, though it's less convenient, but cheaper. Buy books online, which are way cheaper than your local bookstore. Go for the international editions! Same content, just cheaper, less quality paper, and no colour. Buy used whenever possible. Also, the library sometimes carries your textbook, search for it at local libraries and university ones.

22. Trips? Stick to tours and student pricing. Your local student travel agency does NOT give you good deals most of the time. Try the contiki tour for students. Not sure which one is good. Again, use the ISIC and travel cuts, it is cheaper than regular fares. Avoid travel in peak seasons.

23. Avoid vending machines and coffee whenever possible. Buy instant coffee and make it at home. Buy in bulk pop or drinks or food. For example, bring the bag of cornchips with you!

24. Clothing? It's often that teenagers must buy brand names like roots or gap. I can understand. My only tip is wait for deals. Bluenotes goes on big savings on the red tag items near end of season, check it out! It gets cheaper and cheaper. $5/t-shirt and sweater is the cheapest I've seen.

25. Don't fail. Tuition is rising, fixed cost fees for every semester, and courses are added to programs. You're just wasting your own time and money. Read the thread about study habits in backtoschool. Study study study! Prepare for exams and everything! "Failure to prepare is preparing to fail". Again preparing gives you a higher probability of succeeding. If you have photographic memory and don't need to study, go right ahead. For the rest of you 95%, prepare for the exam!

26. Games? stick to PC games, since you already have a PC. Don't buy PS2 and stuff like that, unnecessary.. and they keep upgrading.. PS3.. PS4.. This is tough as it takes lots of self discipline. Avoid the latest games, but download them if you can. (Download has not been proven illegal to me yet.) Wait for games to go on sale.

27. Start looking at flyers and visit RFD often.. alotta people just go in a store and buy blindly. Shop the cheapest stores. Only buy what you need. Don't be crazy and buy 2 laptops. RFD is to get what you need when it goes on sale. Visit freebies often.

28. File income tax through free tax like ufile.ca for 2005 (thread in freebies). HRblock advertises, save you atleast $50 or free, something like that. Also, REMEMBER to get that tax form for tuition credits, it'll save you thousands!

29. Get a small freezer instead of a mini fridge.

30. I especially emphasize this one, because I hate the smell, and my health is threatened by others. Please don't start smoking, or quit now. Save your money and health. Don't do drugs and avoid parties where you might do the wrong thing. I hate to see you end up on a Maury Povich episode! Reduce your drinking habits.

30a. If you seriously need to drink, brew your own beer.

31. Grab those straws and napkins, keep those ketchup and sauces when you visit fastfood restaurants.

32. Keep and take advantage of free envelopes sent by advertisers and billers.

33. Go to free food events.

34. Go to the dollar store for some of our shopping. They sometimes carry the cheapest stuff, and it's just what you need! For example, kitchen tools, most computer cords (S-Video, USB), sauces, party supplies, keychains, etc. You just wanna check with the dollar store before most purchases.

35. Long distance? Forget about using cellphones or landlines. Use VOIP or phone cards, much much cheaper. Check threads in hotdeals.
